4 Tips for Delivering a Talk to Remember


If there's one thing that's capable of giving even the world's most successful professionals an anxiety attack, it's the need to give a very important presentation -- and with good reason.


The quality of a business presentation can be what makes or breaks an important client's impression of you. It can render an audience absolutely riveted right away, or it could cause people to tune out long before it's even finished.


Here's how to make sure yours is everything that it should be.


1.  Be Genuine


Whether you're presenting to an audience of one or a crowd of one thousand, you can rest assured that people can and will spot a fake right away. Your best bet is to be yourself.

Play to your own strengths and use your own personality or experiences to make a connection with your audience.

Don't try to imitate someone else's tone, method, or speaking style. The more authentic you appear in the eyes of your audience, the easier it will be to gain their trust and respect.


2.  Do Your Homework

Smart, successful presenters never walk into the room on presentation day without having done their research on the audience they'll be addressing.

Take the time to learn what you can about them. Find out what they respond to and what their key concerns are ahead of time.

Then fine tune your presentation according to what you learned. Knowing in advance that your message is perfectly suited to your audience will help with nerves as well.


3.  Prioritize Your Presentation's Flow


Successful presentations start strong, end strong, and flow comfortably throughout. Think of your presentation as a story.

Good stories have moments that are more intense and other moments that simply amble along. Some are serious while others are light-hearted.

Collectively, they keep the audience interested and eager to know what happens next. Presentations that are all jokes and humor, or nothing but the cold, hard facts fall flat quickly, leaving an audience bored and underwhelmed. Make sure yours is balanced.


4.  Use Good, Reliable Equipment 



Speaking style, strong messages, and powerful connecting points aren't the only things that can make or break an audience's impression of a presentation. The quality of the equipment you use can have a huge impact on how things go as well. Don't simply rely on a rented projector or projection screen to perform to the right standards. Hotels and similar venues often have rentals on hand, but many of those rentals are also often outmoded or out of repair. The last thing you need is a bad projector that isn't bright enough to show off your carefully planned images or an aging portable screen that is impossible to operate.
